VIAGE goes jazzy
- Posted 18 May 2023
If you’ve been snapping your fingers and scatting for no apparent reason lately, don’t panic! It’s probably just the influence of the Brussels Jazz Weekend coming to us next week. From May 26 to 28, Brussels will pop out a myriad of free jazz concerts around the city and…at VIAGE, obviously! This year again, we will be hosting no less than 3 jazz concerts all through the weekend to give you a solid taste of some subtle and charming jazz made in Brussels.
Formerly called “Brussels Jazz Marathon”, the Brussels Jazz Weekend has taken over since 2016. With over 300.000 visitors per year, this very popular jazz festival in the city has become a must for all fans of the genre. And that’s exactly why VIAGE had to offer you not one, not two, but three jazz concerts at CINNA Bar for this 2023 edition of the Brussels Jazz Weekend.
Let’s start with some swing & groovy jazz
VIAGE’s jazz marathon starts on Friday May 26 with Bachot Muna, a Belgian-Cameroonese artist. With a soul full of groove and a body full of swing, this self-taught and very talented pianist will surprise you with his mesmerising sound on a very jazzy Friday evening. Songwriter, composer and singer, Bachot has managed to create his very own style by merging indigenous rhythms with funk, soul and jazz. Don’t miss this musical exposé of pure style on May 26!
Some vintage jazz & retro atmosphere
On Saturday May 27, from 10 pm, “The Cream Coloured Ponies” will let you in on their vintage jazz universe. This Belgian band will simply take you on a trip to the past to give you a taste of swing music from the 40’s and the 50’s. In the style of Louis Prima, Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and other legends of swing music. No doubt you will shiver with delight at the sound of the charming voices of Roel Ferny (vocals and guitar), Juno Kerstens (double bass & vocals) et Angel Pérez (trumpet and vocals), joined by Jeroen Thomas (keyboard) et Egon Loosveldt (drums). This concert’s motto is simple:
“It don’t mean a thing, if it ain’t got that swing”
– (music by Duke Ellington and lyrics by Irving Mills.)
Swing, jazz & lindy hop: put your dancing shoes on!
To end this jazzy weekend in style, VIAGE welcomes jazz band “Along Comes Mary”. Join singer Marij Hulsmans and her band in the abyss of a swing repertoire from the years 40, 50 and 60, topped with a modern touch. Calling out to all jazz, lindy hop, rock’n’roll and blues lovers: this is the perfect time to get your swing on and dance the afternoon away on Mary & her band’s irresistible tunes. Put your dancing shoes on and come give this 2023 chapter of the Brussels Jazz Weekend a splashing end at CINNA Bar, inside VIAGE, on May 28, from 4 pm to 7 pm.
And while you’re here, why not double the pleasure? Try your luck at the casino, if you’d like, while enjoying the music of our line up for the Brussels Jazz Weekend. Just like our artists, feel free to dress up for the occasion and to get daring on the dance floor. Feeling hungry? Grab a menu at CINNA Bar and indulge in an exquisite dish from our restaurant VIAGE Grill, open until 2 am, as well as in a great cocktail from the bar. Oh and! Don’t forget to raise your glasses to jazz!
