What's in a name
The band name obviously refers to the epic 8-minute-and-12-second instrumental track on the ‘Master of Puppets’ album, which shares its name with this tribute band. Inspired by the constellation Orion, the song evokes an atmosphere reminiscent of a vast night sky. Drummer Lars Ulrich once described it as ‘nine minutes of ever-changing, mind-fucking weird-and-wonderfulness'.
It was a personal favourite for Cliff Burton, who played a crucial role in the song's composition, along with James Hetfield and Ulrich. His iconic bass riff at the heart of the song became the composition's starting point. Burton tragically died in a coach accident on 27 September 1986 while touring Sweden, just a few months after ‘Master of Puppets’ dropped. Orion was performed at his funeral as a tribute to his musical legacy.
Orion
Although Metallica have played parts of ‘Orion’ live over the years, it wasn't until 3 June 2006 that the band performed the entire song live for the first time at the Rock Am Ring Festival in Germany. 'When we play this song, Cliff's spirit is unmistakably present,' Lars Ulrich said in 2023.
In – or with? – that spirit, Orion – A Metallica Experience brings Metallica's music and collective ecstasy to a stage act in which band and audience merge as one.
