Roulette, an all-time favourite
- Posted 06 Jun 2024
Roulette, one of the most iconic casino games, boasts a long history and remains a favourite among both novices and seasoned players. It’s been a go-to game for centuries thanks to the simple rules and the exciting game play.
Roulette originated in 17th-century France. It was there that renowned mathematician Blaise Pascal inadvertently invented the first iteration of the game while attempting to design a perpetual motion machine. The modern roulette wheel was developed in the 18th century and rapidly gained popularity across Europe and beyond. The term roulette derives from the French word for small wheel. The object of the game is to predict where on the wheel the ball will end up, mixing elements of chance with strategy. What’s more, players can choose from a variety of betting options.
There are different versions of roulette, each with its unique characteristics. At VIAGE we play English roulette and the innovative Roul8.
Classic English roulette
English roulette is a variation on the original French roulette but the wheel also has 37 pockets numbered 0 through 36. The difference is in the layout and in the number of players, which is limited to seven. The potential combinations and payout remain the same.
The game offers a plethora of betting options, including betting on single numbers, a row or column of numbers, a colour and even/uneven numbers. At VIAGE betting starts from as low as €5 with a maximum of €200, depending on the table limits. Moreover, players can place ‘call bets’, which cover portions of the roulette wheel, adding to the thrill of the game.
Introducing Roul8, an exciting new variant
Roul8 adds a unique and thrilling twist to traditional roulette, using dice to generate substantial additional winnings. With payouts potentially reaching 888 times your initial stake, this game holds a special allure. The stake is a fixed amount that is specified per table. Payouts occur when the winning number is 8 or when at least two infinity symbols are rolled. There are a total of six winning combinations and the more infinity symbols are rolled, the higher the payout.
What you need to know
The various betting options all have dedicated names. Here’s the full list:
- Inside Bet: a bet on specific numbers or combinations of numbers within the table's number range.
- Outside Bet: a bet on broad categories such as colour (red or black), even or odd numbers, and columns.
- Straight Up: a bet on a single number.
- Split Bet: a bet on two adjacent numbers.
- Street Bet: a bet on three numbers in a horizontal line.
- Corner Bet: a bet on four numbers that make up square.
Strategies for success
Roulette is still a game of chance. This means your fate depends entirely on the odds and your good fortune. Common game strategies focus on minimising losses and maximising the likelihood of placing a winning bet. We’re happy to share a few of the most popular strategies: The most common approach is the Martingale Strategy. With this approach you double your bet after every loss to eventually recover all your losses when you land a winning bet. In the D'Alembert Strategy you increase your bet amount by one predetermined unit after a loss - instead of doubling the amount - and decrease by that same unit following a win.
The Fibonacci Strategy takes a more mathematical approach. This Italian mathematician devised a unique sequence of numbers where each subsequent number is the sum of the two preceding numbers in the sequence. The initial sequence is as follows: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, etc. With this strategy the emphasis is on your wager. For instance, if your initial stake is €1, you bet €1 in the first and second rounds. Subsequently you bet €2 in the third round, €3 in the fourth round, and so on. If you win, you back up two ‘places’.
Too complicated? Then simply use the One Hit Wonder Strategy. Just pick a random number and persist until you get lucky. If your number comes up within 36 rounds, the payout of 35 times your stake will make it worth your while.
