From Clean Streets to Clean Mobility
- Posted 19 Sep 2025

At VIAGE we are taking a step forward together, both in the literal and the figurative sense. During European Mobility Week we support sustainable travel and on World Cleanup Day we roll up our sleeves for a cleaner city. From 16 to 22 September, Brussels will move and shine even more – and you can contribute.
This year, two major European initiatives come together during a unique weekend that will transform Brussels. On Saturday 20 September, residents and visitors will join forces for World Cleanup Day. On Sunday 21 September, the traditional Car-Free Sunday will mark the highlight of European Mobility Week. This confluence is the perfect opportunity to reflect on how clean streets and clean mobility go hand in hand.
Cleaning is also moving
Just like last year, the VIAGE team will actively contribute to World Cleanup Day on Saturday 20 September. Together with the traders’ association and the City of Brussels, we will gather at De Brouckère to rid the pedestrian zone of litter. This annual worldwide initiative brings together millions of people to clean up their surroundings and thereby contribute to a healthier planet. It is not just about picking up waste but also about raising awareness. Moreover, it’s a unique opportunity to strengthen the sense of community in the heart of the city.
The participants will meet in a bona fide Cleanliness Village on De Brouckère Square, which will act as the vibrant centre of the day’s activities between 11 am and 5 pm. Visitors can try out the vehicles of the Cleaning department, take part in games and workshops, and enjoy an upcycling parade. For this special occasion, Manneken Pis will wear his street sweeper uniform on Friday and Saturday. On top of this, Jeanneke Pis will be making her first appearance with a special display dedicated to public cleanliness. Cleanliness is everyone’s business but there’s no reason why it can’t also be fun.
Car-free is not synonymous with standing still
The best thing about this weekend is the natural transition from cleaning our streets to reclaiming them for sustainable mobility. Between 9.30 am and 7 pm on Sunday 21 September, the Brussels-Capital Region will transform into Europe’s largest car-free zone, giving residents and visitors a rare opportunity to experience the city in a completely new way.
This Car-Free Sunday is the highlight of European Mobility Week (16-22 September), with this year’s central theme ‘Mobility for Everyone’. Brussels will switch gears that day – literally. No exhaust fumes, no honking – just pedestrians, cyclists, playing children and trams gliding silently by. And the best part? The STIB is making all public transport free that day so everyone can move around freely and sustainably.
Together for Brussels
For VIAGE, this is not just a coincidence but a meaningful connection. That is why we encourage everyone to take an active part in the week’s activities. Come and help with the cleanup on Saturday. Rediscover our beautiful city without cars on Sunday. Choose sustainable travel, even after this week. Because whether you’re picking up litter or cycling, every step counts. And together, we will make Brussels a cleaner, healthier and more accessible city for everyone.
