Three-leaf clover
The story of the saint takes us back to 373 AD, which is when Maewyn Succat breathes his first. At sixteen he is abducted by Irish raiders and kept as a slave for six years. After receiving a divine vision from God he finally manages to escape. He travels to France and embarks on a religious education. The young priest renames himself Patrick and returns to Ireland to take on the holy task of converting Ireland to Christianity. For his missionary work he uses the three-leaf clover or shamrock as a metaphor for the Holy trinity: Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Patrick died on 17 March 461 AD in the Irish town of Saul, County Down.
Four-leaf clover
Clover occupied a special place in Celtic culture. As the Celts believed every clover had its meaning, Patrick’s use of clover leaves as teaching material was actually very clever. As early as the Middle Ages, a four-leaf clover was attributed special powers. The four leaves of the plant symbolise perfect unity. They stand for prosperity/hope, trust, love and, naturally, good fortune. What’s more, it takes luck just to find one.
Believing there's no such thing as luck is very unlucky. Like, the worst. Beyond stealing someone's lucky four-leaf clover. – Caprice Crane
Four is considered a holy number. There are four seasons (spring-summer-autumn-winter), four elements (earth-fire-air-water), four cardinal points (north-east-south-west), four evangelists (John-Matthew-Mark-Luke), etc. Moreover, the number four also represents the Virgin Mary. And last but not least, the shape of the four-leaf clover is reminiscent of a cross.
